As 2011 came to a close and 2012 is underway, we thought it was the perfect time to break out our Best Android Games of the 2011 lists. After several debates, arguments, and a few hurt feelings the staff at Android-Apps.com & Android-Games.com has managed to put together several Top 5 lists of the best games to drop in 2011. We’ve done it by genre, and this time around we’re giving you our top picks for the best Platformers. Without further ado, we proudly present The Best Android Platformers of 2011…
They Need to Be Fed is a gravity defying platformer from game makers YoYo Games. The premise is simple; you just need to make it into the monsters mouth at the end of the level while avoiding dangers and collecting diamonds. Been there, done that… right? Wrong, as you run and jump you’ll find out that something is wrong with the gravity and that’s where the fun comes into play with the games 360° gravity. There are over 80 levels on 11 worlds and 200 diamonds to collect as you progress through the game. I had fun playing this one when it came out, and enjoyed it again when they released the expansion. You can enjoy They Need to Be Fed for yourself for only $1.00 in the Android market.
Angry Mob Games, makers of the uber-popular Guerilla Bob gave us another awesome game this year called Muffin Knight. Muffin Knight is a crazy platformer filled with Unicorns, Pandas, Ninjas, Vikings, and Muffins of course. You’ll have to jump through the levels while avoiding the baddies and snagging the muffins. The fun starts when you grab a muffin as you’ll turn into a different character with different abilities every time you pick one up. There are 18 characters to use and all of them are upgradable which is never a bad thing. It’s really an awesome game and one that’s hard to put down once you pick it up. You can try Muffin Knight for free or pick up the paid version for only $2.99.
Looking for a game to show off to your friends? If so look no further than a game called Roboto from Fenix Fire entertainment. Roboto is like having a console quality game in your pocket as it’s by far one of the slickest platformers to grace our screens over the past year. You take control of Roboto and will jump, shoot, stomp on enemies, and collect coins as you travel through the gorgeous levels on the way to the girl of your dreams. Fans of old-school platformers will love it and new gamers will be wowed just the same. There is a free online demo you can try from their website or you can go ahead and snag the full version for $3.99.
Sonic CD is by far one of the best overall games to come out this year regardless of genre and much to the chagrin of Sonic fans worldwide. This port give you everything you love and remember from the old classic, and it runs as great as it looks. I wasn’t sure how the controls would go over at first, but Sega really did a great job with the controls and the whole package overall. Don’t be fooled by the low market score; people had a lot of issues downloading the game when it was first released, but those issues seem to be cleared up now. If you were a fan of Sonic CD or classic gaming in general, this is one game you’ve gotta’ get. You can find Sonic CD in the Android market for $4.99.
Wind-up Knight is an action packed side-scroller from Robot Invader that puts you in control of a cool little wind-up knight. It’s also a game that will frustrate you to death as it looks outstanding and seems simple, but it’s very, very difficult once it gets going. You’ll need to run, jump, and hack your way past enemies and obstacles as you make your way to the evil Black Knight and try to rescue the Princess. The game has over 50 levels of fun, achievements, and a few different weapons and armor to help you out as it’s one of the hardest platformers around. You get some of the game for free, but all of it can be unlocked for free if you’re hardcore enough. You can pick up Robot Invader’s Wind-Up Knight in the Android market for free.
