As 2011 came to a close and 2012 is underway, we thought it was the perfect time to break out our Best Games of the 2011 lists. After several debates, arguments, and a few hurt feelings the staff at Android-Apps.com & Android-Games.com has managed to put together several Top 5 lists of the best games to drop in 2011. We’ve done it by genre, and this time around we’re giving you our top picks for the best strategy games. Without further ado, we proudly present The Best Android Strategy Games of 2011…
Great Little War Game is an awesome 3D turn-based strategy game from Rubicon Development that puts you in charge of scores of little soldiers on a variety of missions. Great Little War Game is a deep game with three different modes of play, 4 difficulty settings, and around 30 missions. Graphically, it’s as solid as the best games around and the gameplay is top-notch as well; when you factor in the comical storylines and achievements, you’ve got one outstanding game and one of the best games around regardless of genre. There is no free version available, but the full version is a real deal at only $2.99.
Highborn is a game we covered close to a year ago, and while the game has received some new additions one thing remains the same… it’s a blast to play. Highborn gives gamers a slower paced tactical experience as they move their forces around an overhead map and then throws you into some great 3D combat. You can play at your own pace as you unlock unique hero characters and work to complete the games comical missions. Chapters 2 and 3 in the saga were released in November and December as well which adds even more depth to an already awesome game. Highborn’s been a favorite of ours for awhile, and we can’t wait to see what the guys at Jetset have up their sleeves next. If you haven’t heard of Popcap’s stellar game Plants vs Zombies you’ve been living under a rock for the past several years. The zombie game finally made its way to Android in 2011, and fans were beyond thrilled as PvZ is one of the best strategy games around. You’ll line up your army of plants in front of your home to try and stop the oncoming Zombie hordes. Your 49 Zombie killing plants are mainly used for the offensive although some are purely defensive; you’ll need them both as you’ll have to face 26 different types of zombies including football players, bucketheads, swimmers and even a Michael Jackson lookalike. Plants vs. Zombies is just as fun now as it was when it first came out, and if you haven’t played it already you need to give it a go. You can find Plants vs Zombies in the Android market for $3.05.
Age of Wind 2 is one of those games that can fit into multiple genres, and a game that also deserves to be in the best of 2011 category as well. Age of Wind 2 puts you at the helm of a ship where you’ll discover new islands, buy and sell goods, and go to battle with other fleets. The game boasts 17 ships, 21 islands, and plenty battles. The controls can be a bit tricky at first, but once you get the hang of it you’ll see why the game is so damned fun. The developers seemed to have changed or at least changed their company name so here’s to hoping we finally get an update on the game. There have been other similar games out since this one, but in our opinions Age of Wind 2 is the best of the bunch. You can try out the demo or get the full version for $1.99 in the Android market.
Defense Craft is one of a series of Strategy games from developers Central Bytes, and it’s a fun blend of real time strategy, tower defense and RPG’s. The game has some massive maps and you’ll need them as you’ll have lots of cool units to control in battle. The RPG element comes into play as your soldiers and towers gain experience; as the battles progress and you take down your enemies your units will become stronger and harder to kill. Almost everything is upgradable, and there’s enough depth to keep gamers busy for ages. There is a free version of Defense Craft Strategy HD to try or you can go ahead and get the full version for $2.78.
