Android's operating system holds an astounding 54 percent impression share in the Smartphone and tablet market. It has been increasing rapidly each month by 48 percent since August. These figures are the most recent updates from the mobile ad provider, Millennial Media. The Android application ad spend percentage is at 49 percent, which is the highest with iOS in close second with 41 percent. Android development has increased the profit shares in their market due to availability of their software for phones and tablets. The open source software is what makes Android a worthy opponent to Apple's iPhone. While RIM remains to competitor, it is nowhere near dominating and remains in third place for most, if not all, shares.
Apple
The iOS operating system, on the other hand, which includes the iPhone, iPad, and iPod account for only half the number of shares Android have, 28 percent of impression shares. While Android is gaining minimalist in the mobile phone market, Apple's iPad still controls the market in the tablet share. Apple also dominates when it comes to the hardware. Apple has recorded 23 percent of the Smartphone shares. Android Apple follows in these shares through their OEMS: HTC, Samsung, and Motorola with 16 percent, 14.5 percent, and 11.3 percent respectively.
Millennial
This was the first case in which Millennial used multiple versions of devices together in calculating the shares. It included Apple's iPhone 4 with legacy versions, Motorola Droid with Droid 2, HTC Desire and HTC Desire HD with. Despite the reports with the devices combination, people may want to look at the breakdowns for the shares by single devices. However, Millennial has not provided that, and more importantly, combining devices is more useful in tracking the cumulative growth of both Android and iOS through their various devices.
Millennial may not be one of the other top companies that delivers monthly reports on market share numbers, such as IDC, Gartner, Nielsen, NPD, and more, but it definitely is a growing company in a field that is becoming important for consumers and corporations both. These reports are becoming such a big deal that even Google has stated that it will soon begin to report the optimization of websites on mobile phones as a feature of ads quality for AdWords campaigns that are the source of mobile search traffic.
Google goes on to say that "As a result of this change, ads that have mobile optimized landing pages will perform better in AdWords-they will generally drive more traffic at a lower cost mobile"
What this means is that it will be a benefit to websites to make their websites more accessible and quicker. They should be designed for optimization since viewers are now using Smartphone's and tablets to explore the web. This is why monthly reports from companies like Millennial are relevant and significant for both users and makers of these devices. Consumers are using their devices to access material online, and the quicker the website to more traffic it will gain. Speed is the name of the game today when it comes to surfing the internet.
